What type of Learner is your child with Autism?
Children naturally gravitate towards their love and interest, perhaps because that is how they are wired and have higher aptitude.
This morning I stumbled upon the “Theory of multiple intelligences” while researching for therapy tactics and techniques.
This theory was introduced by psychologist Howard Gardner in his book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_multiple_intelligences)
According to the theory there are different types of Learners
NATURAL - Experiment, Curious
MUSIC - Hum, Sing, Listener
PEOPLE - Social
REASONING - Analytical, Structured
BODY - Energetic, Practice
PICTURE - Concentrate, Shapes
WORD - Story Teller
SELF - Internally Motivated
Children naturally gravitate towards their love and interest, perhaps because that is how they are wired and have higher aptitude. We need to remember that our children with autism are different, they do things differently, experience the world differently because they are wired differently. We parents and teachers need to identify their love and interest instead of moulding them to fit in the “real world” by always correcting them, trying to teach them everything and continuously trying to make them “normal”.
Maybe it's time for us parents and teachers to focus more on our child's natural way of learning, instead of forcing them to learn things they don't like and conform to the way others are.
